Are You Still Running A Cylon Unitron BMS?

If your building is still operating on a legacy Cylon Unitron BMS, you’ve probably been told the same thing repeatedly: it all needs ripping out. While upgrades are sometimes necessary, that is not always the only or best option.

At Boss Controls, we take a more practical view. Many Cylon Unitron systems are still fundamentally sound, and with the right expertise, they can continue to deliver reliable building control without the disruption and cost of a full replacement.

Support Beyond “End of Life”

Legacy doesn’t have to mean unsupported. Boss Controls provides ongoing support for Cylon Unitron installations, helping building owners and facilities teams keep existing systems operational, stable, and compliant with day-to-day requirements.

Our engineers understand the architecture, software, and operational behaviour of these systems, allowing issues to be diagnosed and resolved efficiently rather than defaulting to wholesale upgrades.

Keeping Existing Systems Working

For many sites, continuity matters more than change. We support legacy Cylon Unitron BMS platforms through:

  • System maintenance and fault finding
  • Software support and configuration changes
  • Graphics, trend logs, and alarm management
  • Integration with other building systems where appropriate

This approach helps extend the usable life of your current installation while maintaining performance and occupant comfort.

A Sensible, Cost-Effective Approach

Full BMS replacement projects can be expensive, disruptive, and difficult to justify when a system is still meeting operational needs. By supporting what you already have, Boss Controls helps you avoid unnecessary capital expenditure and forces investment where it delivers real value.

Our Partnership With ABB

We’re thrilled to have ABB as a partner in our portfolio. This partnership strengthens our ability to work closely with customers to deliver smart building systems that are easy to integrate and tailored to diverse needs. With Cylon as part of the ABB portfolio, it adds decades of experience in open-protocol, user-friendly BMS solutions.

Case Study with Royal Star & Garter

A strong example of our work with Cylon Unitron is our partnership with Royal Star & Garter, a charity that provides loving, compassionate care and support for veterans and their families living with disability or dementia.

This project marked our first engagement with Cylon systems. To ensure we could deliver the highest standard of support, several of our engineers completed Cylon training, giving them the confidence and technical knowledge required to work effectively with the system.

Following a detailed site visit and investigation, we were able to confirm that the existing Cylon system could continue to be used. Rather than recommending unnecessary replacement, we proposed a solution focused on optimisation and remote support.

Within two weeks, we implemented a remote monitoring and control solution across three sites, providing Royal Star & Garter with improved visibility and control of their plant systems. This included:

  • Adjusting and monitoring boiler setpoints
  • Ensuring areas were heating and cooling as required
  • Creating user-specific access roles for each site

Royal Star & Garter now benefits from greater control, improved system visibility, and the ability to work towards energy savings, all without the cost and disruption of a full controls replacement. Ongoing remote support also means issues can be identified and addressed more efficiently, and, in some instances, fixed without even needing to attend the site.

Testimonial:

“Working with Boss Controls on our Cylon Unitron system across three sites has been an exceptionally positive experience. As a charity committed to delivering the highest standards of care at Royal Star & Garter, it was essential for us to find a partner we could trust to provide practical, sustainable, and cost-effective solutions. Rather than recommending a full system replacement, they took the time to understand our existing setup and demonstrated how optimisation and remote support could deliver meaningful improvements.

Within just weeks, we had enhanced monitoring and control in place, clearer visibility of our plant systems, and confidence that our heating, domestic hot water, and mechanical ventilation were operating as intended. The ability to identify and resolve issues remotely has already reduced disruption and saved valuable time, and we are now in a much stronger position to progress our energy-efficiency goals. Their professionalism, technical expertise, and collaborative approach have made them a highly valued partner.” – Mo Bakkali, Sustainability Lead at Royal Star & Garter
